Red Bumps on Arms, or Keratosis Pilaris
If you have red bumps on your arms, it’s very likely you have a condition called Keratosis Pilaris. It affects about half the population, but most people aren’t even aware they have it.
It’s most commonly found on the back of the upper arm (where your triceps are) but can also be located on the thighs, calves, buttocks, cheeks, lower arms, and back. Practically anywhere that hair can grow, it can leave red bumps there too.
So, what is this incredibly common skin-disease (yes, it is a disease)? Well, first of all, it’s completely harmless. The only reason it has such a bad rep is because of the unsightly texture it gives the skin. Not to mention it can be incredibly difficult to get rid of.
Keratosis Pilaris is a common follicular (your hair follicles) condition that can cause patches of rough, red bumps on the arms and legs (most common areas). It’s completely hereditary, so you can blame your folks for what they’ve given you. It occurs due to an excess build-up of keratin (a protein) in the skin that clogs the pores which will commonly cause raised bumps and ingrown hairs.
Currently there is no cure for Keratosis Pilaris, but there are various treatments that help people. From my research, I’ve found that what works for one may not work for another, so keep that in mind. A lot of people experiment with different techniques such as diets, tanning, skin creams, etc.
